Waste Disposal Grounds Planning
Update: The 6 month transfer station trial at the Gladstone Waste Disposal Grounds is set to start in March/April 2026!
In December, the Municipality shared the following information regarding the waste transfer station trial at the Gladstone Waste Disposal Grounds:
Council has approved a 6 month trial of a waste transfer bin at the Gladstone Waste Disposal Grounds. Rather than waste being dumped in the shed, it will be disposed of in the waste transfer bin and hauled to the Portage Regional Landfill. A waste transfer station operates in the same manner as a waste disposal grounds with recycling, tire and metal disposal areas and the burn pit, the only difference is rather than waste being thrown into a shed or over a bank, the waste is dumped in a large waste transfer bin and hauled to a regional landfill outside of the Municipality. The site attendant is also required with a waste transfer site.
The trial period will be able to help council determine the volume of waste generated and provide a better idea of costs that may be associated with the operation of a waste transfer station should they choose to proceed in that direction with conversion of waste disposal grounds to waste transfer sites.
Operation of the current landfills is costly as it needs to receive adequate cover and meet government regulations under the waste disposal grounds operating permit. As the operating permits for the current waste disposal sites come up for renewal in the next couple of years, the current sites do not meet regulations for expansion as the setbacks from railways, highways and property lines have changed as well as soil requirements and other environmental factors.
The conversion to waste transfer stations may be more cost effective once established and will meet government environmental regulations under a waste transfer station permit.
The 6 month trial will provide Council with more data to make an informed decision.
